Participation in surveys

How to participate?

State Data Agency informs a person sampled for a statistical survey with an official letter. In the letter, the following information is provided: the name of the survey, who will be conducting the interview, what questions will be asked, what data will be collected, for what purposes the survey-based statistical information will be used. Moreover, the letter contains brief information on how the respondent may participate in the survey, contacts (should additional information or help be needed).

For more information on participation in a statistical survey, see the section Data collection modes.

What special knowledge or information do I need to answer the survey questions?

Statistical questionnaires are prepared in such a manner that questions would be clear to respondents and it would not be difficult to answer them. Most questions are about daily life – so they usually do not require any special knowledge.

Is participation compulsory?

To produce statistical information, only part of usual residents of Lithuania is interviewed, i.e. statistical sampling methods are used to draw a random sample from the total population of Lithuania. The quality of statistics therefore depends on the participation of the persons sampled in the survey, the accuracy and honesty of their answers.

Anyone of us may find ourselves in a situation where we need statistical information, e.g. to analyse price level changes, when is the most favourable moment for planning big purchases, what professions are in the greatest demand, what jobs are best paid, etc. Statistical information is very useful for businesses – to assess the product market, decide upon development possibilities, labour force and specific specialist demand issues, analyse and forecast the development in crop and animal production, plan agricultural production, analyse product consumption.

Legal basis

The main legal acts regulating the carrying out of statistical surveys, participation of population in data collection and data protection are as follows:

  • Law on Official Statistics and State Data Governance of the Republic of Lithuania
  • Law on Legal Protection of Personal Data
