  • Statistical survey on Karaim population

    Description of the Survey

2022 marks the 625th anniversary of the establishment of the Karaim Community in Lithuania, the time of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, with whom the history of the Community is closely connected. In order to commemorate this anniversary, 2022 has been declared the Year of Lithuanian Karaims, and on the occasion of this Jubilee Year, at the request of the Karaim Community, Statistics Lithuania is conducting a statistical survey. This will be a peculiar ethnostatistic "picture" of the Lithuanian Karaim Community, especially valuable, as the results will be comparable with a similar study conducted by Statistics Lithuanian in 1997.

The aim of the Survey is to collect data on Karaims living in Lithuania, and to publish statistical information on the demographic, ethnocultural, social and economic characteristics of Karaims.

Type and scope of the Survey

The Survey is one-time. The Survey population is determined on the basis of the data of the Population Register of the Republic of Lithuania (hereinafter - the “Population Register”). All persons of Karaim ethnicity are selected from the Population Register, and the households in which the elected person lives are surveyed.

    Conduct of the Survey

Each household participating in the Survey is informed by an official letter that it is invited to participate in the statistical survey and, by connecting to the electronic survey system e. Statistika gyventojams on the website of Statistics Lithuania, fill in the electronic questionnaire. The resident and his (her) family members connect to the electronic survey system by entering the code specified in the letter. Those who have not filled in the electronic questionnaire on their own are interviewed by a specialist (interviewer) from Statistics Lithuania by telephone.

A one-time statistical survey questionnaire KTG-01 of the Karaim population is used to collect statistical data.

    Dissemination of information

Statistical information on the Survey results will be published in the news release on the Official Statistics Portal in 2022.
